4th Battle [video/action for Route 8]
[As exciting as a city like Saffron is to explore, on a nice afternoon like this Temeraire is eager to be out on the routes once he's finished with work. Besides, in between training it's the only place where he can properly give lessons to the larger members of his team. Today, he's once again trying to get Shimmer interested in mathematics. He's sure it must be only a matter of time before he finds a good subject for her…philosophy hadn't gone over well, nor had learning to write. But who wouldn't be interested in math? He's found a nice flat section of road to write on, and uses a large stick to draw out a right triangle in front of his (very bored looking) Charizard.]
Now, Shimmer, all you have to do is find the length of the third. It is very simple, only use the Pythagorean Theorem like I showed you.
[Shimmer just snorts, rustling her wings and giving him a very clear Look. A Look that could say nothing else but 'Are you even serious right now?'. But even as Temeraire keeps trying to cajole her, there's another Pokemon off to the side, staring intently at the equation. Sheep the Flaaffy has been generally ignored in Temeraire's crusade to Educate His Pokemon, but that hasn't stopped him from watching. Practicing on his own. Waiting. The problem is so simple, and Shimmer isn't even interested, and sometimes a pink electric sheep just can't deal with being overlooked anymore.]
[Sheep sees his moment.]
[Very deliberately, he stands, walks over to the equation in the dirt, and starts writing. A squared plus B squared equals C squared, with the sides being 3 and 4, means that the length of the hypotenuse must be the square root of 25, and the answer is 5. Sheep circles his answer, stands, crosses his arms, and bleats at Temeraire.]
[Temeraire stares back, for once completely speechless.]
[The feed comes on aimed at what looks like simply a large patch of smoothed dirt, not quite dry from yesterday's rain. But, on second glance, the entire patch is filled with mathematical equations, neatly written into the dust. There are all sorts of problems, from pythagorean 'solve for the length of the side of this right triangle' to quadratic formulas. As the camera moves over all this it finally reaches the lower corner of the patch, where a Flaaffy is crouched and holding a stick in one paw to write, intently working out something to do with a circle.]
[Now, the video turns back around to show Temeraire, looking a mix of pleased, stunned, and very proud.]
He has done all this himself, and been able to answer every problem I have given him. All from his own observations.
[He pauses for a long moment, before starting to look embarrassed and more than a little ashamed.]
I had not realized he could be so clever, and did not bother to try teaching him anything myself before. I am afraid I have been treating him very unfairly, just because of his species. I did not even give him a proper name.
Does anyone know how I might best begin to make it up to him?
